HALF A WORLD AWAY BY MIKE GAYLE

PLOT SUMMARY:

Strangers living worlds apart. Strangers with nothing in common. But it wasn't always that way...

Kerry Hayes is single mum, living on a tough south London estate. She provides for her son by cleaning houses she could never hope to afford. Taken into care as a child, Kerry cannot ever forget her past.

Noah Martineau is a successful barrister with a beautiful wife, daughter and home in fashionable Primrose Hill. Adopted as a child, Noah always looks forward, never back.

When Kerry reaches out to the sibling she lost on the day they were torn apart as children, she sets in motion a chain of events that will have life-changing consequences for them both.

MY REVIEW:

Be warned, this book is a total tear jerker and I’m not one who cries easily when it comes to books. Sirius Black and Snape dying in Harry Potter are still the 2 most defining crying moments for me when it comes to books. However, this book may have succeeded in provoking a tear or two from me at the end. ⁣

I won’t lie, I was initially unsure of the book as it started off a little slow and I wasn’t really sure where it was going. However, it was actually a great way for Gayle to set the scene, immerse the reader in the world of the story and allow the reader to get to know the main protagonists. ⁣I loved both Kerry and Noah, but Kerry was definitely the stand out character for me. Her love for her brother was pouring off the pages and as an eldest child with two younger sisters, I could totally relate to her sense of duty and protectiveness for Noah.

I won’t say a lot more because I don’t want to spoil it but this book is beautifully written and is a heartwarming, and heartbreaking, story of family, loyalty and love. It really highlights the importance of family and as someone who is incredibly close to their family and hasn’t seen them for a long time due to COVID, I really connected with the story and the characters. It is my first time reading one of Gayle’s books and I can’t wait to read more from him.

“If you wait too long for the right moment to tell somebody the truth, it’s practically the same as lying.”
